Plant traits determining biogeomorphic landscape dynamics: A study on clonal expansion strategies driving cliff formation at marsh edges

چکیده

Despite the well-recognized importance of plant traits for biogeomorphic development landscapes, our understanding remains limited how species-specific respond to and serve as drivers sedimentary dynamics within a landscape. By manipulating series laboratory experiments, using mesocosms flume, we examined differences in expansion strategy, i.e., clonal step-length laterally expanding tillers, both sediment type drive cliff formation persistence. We compared three marsh species, with contrasting traits, that are dominant many estuaries worldwide: Spartina anglica, Scirpus maritimus, Phragmites australis. Our results revealed S. anglica tussocks tend have high shoot density due short step-length, whereas maritimus were much more diffuse longer step-length. P. australis showed intermediate traits. Clonal did show within-species variation response texture, but remained most important. Species smaller step-lengths, such this study, likely induce cliffs at edge by driving larger heights also having lower capacity grow out from cliffs. findings thus illustrate dynamic landscape features like edges depend on species. This enhances current edges, is instructive role distinct dynamics.

Cryogenic Evaporite Formation at Lewis Cliff, Antarctica: a Mars Analog Study

Introduction: The discovery of substantial evaporite deposits at the Opportunity rover landing site in Meridiani Planum on Mars argues for significant interactions between liquid water and local rocks during some stage of the Martian past. However, evaporites can form under a dazzling variety of water/rock ratios, from long-term evaporation of expansive reservoirs to periodic recycling of water...

Mangrove expansion and salt marsh decline at mangrove poleward limits.

Mangroves are species of halophytic intertidal trees and shrubs derived from tropical genera and are likely delimited in latitudinal range by varying sensitivity to cold. There is now sufficient evidence that mangrove species have proliferated at or near their poleward limits on at least five continents over the past half century, at the expense of salt marsh. Avicennia is the most cold-toleran...

Plant Macrofossils from Kirchner Marsh, Minnesota—A Paleoecological Study

Seeds and other plant macrofossils were extracted from cores used previously for pollen analysis, and the results are presented in the style of pollen diagrams. The Zone A macroflora is characterized by abundant Picea (spruce) and Larix (tamarack) needles. The remaining species are widely distributed on swampy lake shores, in silty lakes, or in forest-floor communities. The macroflora contains ...

Do species' traits predict recent shifts at expanding range edges?

Although some organisms have moved to higher elevations and latitudes in response to recent climate change, there is little consensus regarding the capacity of different species to track rapid climate change via range shifts. Understanding species' abilities to shift ranges has important implications for assessing extinction risk and predicting future community structure. At an expanding front,...
